Global Oil Statistics in light of Hormuz

Mar 5, 2026

Hormuz Strait & World Energy: Below is a table with Oil & LNG-related stats. Saudi & UAE overland oil pipelines have spare capacity of 2.6mn BpD, says the EIA (can this be stretched to 4.0?). That compares to 20mn BpD Oil & derivatives traversing the strait, which is 20% of world supply. Strait shipping also accounts for 20% of global LNG trade. Asia receives 80%+ of Oil & LNG that traverses the strait. IEA countries + others do have strategic oil reserves for emergencies, while EU underground NatGas reserves are 30% full, a multi-year low for March. A fair assumption is that all will be done to prevent Iran from meaningfully blocking the strait. But Europe & Asia need to continue strategically building viable alternatives (both in the form of energies & partners)…
