Colombia Presidential elections 2026: round 1

Colombia: A country the size of Spain + France voted for president in the first round on 31 May.

The messages? Voters want an end to violence, establishment politics has faded, and financial markets applaud.

• De la Espriella pulled far more votes from Valencia and the undecided bloc than opinion polls predicted.

• De la Espriella (43.7%) and Cepeda (40.9%) advance to the 21 June second round.

• At almost 58%, voter turnout was 3 percentage points higher than in the first round of 2022.

• More than 24 million of 41 million eligible voters participated.

• Colombia is divided by three mountain ranges that rise to over 5,400m.

• It is the only South American country with both Atlantic and Pacific coastlines.

• Its coat of arms still includes the Isthmus of Panama.

• Colombia's democratic traditions trace back to the 19th century.
